This test allows your doctor to view the inside of the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes. The HSG uses a combination of X rays and a special fluid (radiocontrast liquid) referred to as dye to assess the uterus for overgrowths of the lining (polyps) or overgrowth of the muscle (fibroids). In addition, the HSG can gain insight as to whether the tubes are opened, swollen or scarred.

It is performed between the 5th and 14th day of your cycle in a radiology suite under the direction of one of our doctors. One of your doctors will perform the HSG . This test lasts about 20 minutes from start to finish. It involves a speculum exam, a swabbing of the cervix and placement of a catheter at the opening of the cervix. The speculum is then removed and as your doctor passes the dye fluid through the catheter, a radiologist takes X-rays of your pelvis. These X rays show where the fluid is and allow your doctor to assess the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes.
