In Some cases like premature ovarian failure or severe egg factor infertility, the only option for achieving a pregnancy is through the use of donated eggs. With egg donation, a donor undergoes controlled ovarian hyperstimulation in order to mature numerous eggs. Ultimately, her eggs are retrieved and then fertilized with the recipient partner’s sperm. Embryos are generated and some are placed in the uterus of the recipient that has been synchronized with the donor.
This process requires the coordination of both donor and recipient. Donors fall into several categories: Directed-known, Directed-anonymous, Non-directed (anonymous). We realize that this terminology tends to confusing and therefore, please allow us to help clarify the distinctions.
The Directed-known donor is someone that you know who has volunteered to provide you with her eggs. Typically, she is either a friend or relative.
The Non-directed/anonymous donor is an individual that we have recruited through our Anonymous Egg Donation Program. She has volunteered to provide her eggs to a recipient in need because of an extreme sense of altruism and expects to remain completely unknown to the recipient. She also expects to have no knowledge as to the final outcome of the cycle.
As implied by the title, Directed-anonymous donor shares features with the other types of donors. Directed-anonymous donors are obtained outside of our Anonymous Egg Donation Program and therefore are not recruited by our center. They are not the friends or relatives of the recipient and typically are matched through third party commercial matching services with which we have no ties, influence or control. These donors may communicate with the recipient via email or telephone and even by “face to face” meetings in order to facilitate the matching arrangement. However, contact and the exchange of personal identifiers (telephone numbers, addresses and even full names) are limited and usually arranged by the recruitment agency are facilitated by legal counsel.
