A retrieval is the process by which the ovarian follicles are aspirated by the physician into tubes. It is then the responsibility of the embryologist to find the oocyte (egg) in the follicular fluid and to transfer the oocyte to the appropriate culture media for the insemination. The process usually occurs while you are asleep from anesthesia medication using a trans-vaginal ultrasound probe. Some discomfort from the procedure is normal and can usually be treated with over the counter pain medication. Please consult with you physician first.
