Ectopic Pregnancy Bookmark This Page

An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that is not located within the uterine cavity. Most commonly, ectopic pregnancies reside within one of the fallopian tubes, however they can be found in the abdominal cavity, ovary or cervix. Ectopic pregnancies are indicative of a tubal problem.

A pregnancy that is not situated within the uterus will lead to a surgical emergency if left untreated. Women who conceive after fertility treatment are routinely followed so that if present, the ectopic pregnancy is diagnosed early enough to be treated medically. On occasion, an ectopic pregnancy escapes detection. Signs of a rupturing ectopic pregnancy include, severe abdominal pain, shoulder pain, back pain and shortness of breath. If present, it is crucial that you call your doctor immediately. Unfortunately, ectopic pregnancies cannot be transplanted to the uterus, instead they must be eliminated. In many cases this can be done without surgery.
