When it has been determined that you have ovulated or we have determined you are ready to ovulate (trigger) by an hCG injection, you will also be instructed regarding setting up your insemination. Your partner will come in beforehand to provide a specimen. If there are any issues regarding sperm collection in our facility please bring that to the attention of your nurse coordinator. Given that your partner has likely produced a specimen at our facility for a semen analysis, the collection process should be familiar to him and any such issue should already have been encountered.
On occasion, your partner may have difficulty producing a specimen or scheduling issues may make it impossible for him to be present when necessary. For these reasons, we offer sperm freezing allowing for a thaw on the required day. this does add expense to the process and frozen thawed sperm may not function as well as a fresh specimen. This frozen specimen would serve as a backup with the primary goal of obtaining a fresh specimen for your insemination.
Sperm freezing is something that must be set up in advance so please notify our lab in a timely manner of this desire.
If you are using frozen sperm from a donor bank, please order the specimen before your cycle begins as setting up your account and transport of the sperm can take some time.
Our lab staff will prepare the sperm for the insemination prior to your arrival and you will confirm that the specimen is yours. The insemination itself is very similar to an internal exam. A nurse coordinator will perform the insemination using a speculum and a special insemination catheter. Your cervix will be swabbed of mucus, the catheter passed and the specimen injected. You may experience minor cramping during and after the procedure. Complications from inseminations are rare. If you have any significant issues following an insemination (heavy bleeding, severe pain, fevers or chills), please call the office.
If you do not get a period within 16 days of after your insemination or if your period is unusual in any way, you should contact the office for a pregnancy test.
