This a diagnostic tool that uses high frequency sound waves to create an image of the pelvic structures. The image is sent to a viewing screen for observation from a small probe inserted into the vagina. This type of ultrasound requires an empty bladder. A transvaginal ultrasound probe should not cause any discomfort or pain and often feels similar to the pressure sensation felt during a pelvic exam. This is not an x-ray and has no known side effects. Some people have found that wearing a loose skirt on days when the ultrasound is done makes it simpler to prepare for this exam and easier to dress afterwards.

Ultrasound is used both for the diagnosis of uterine polyps and fibroids and to monitor the progress of some treatments.

Ultrasound evaluations are painless and relatively quick.
